05:41 AM EST, 02/12/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Asian stock markets were mixed and muted on Monday, with most regional exchanges closed on New Year's or national holidays.

In India, the Sensex closed off 0.7%, while Sydney's ASX 200 index finished down 0.4%. The Thai SET gained 0.1%.

Exchanges in mainland China, Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore, Taiwan and Tokyo were shuttered.

In other regional news, Indonesia is seeking to import 200,000 metric tons of rice from Thailand, its state food procurement agency said, reported Reuters.

Indonesia has been suffering from a drought triggered by El Nino conditions in the Pacific Ocean and has been importing rice in the last year to make up for a lack of domestic production.
