European Equities Close Lower in Monday Trading; German Producer Prices Decline

12:05 PM EDT, 10/21/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The European stock markets closed lower in Monday trading as the Stoxx Europe 600 fell 0.66%, the Swiss Market Index declined 0.53%, France's CAC lost 1.01%, the FTSE in London was down 0.48%, and Germany's DAX dropped 1.02%.

In Germany, producer prices for industrial products declined 0.5% in September compared with the previous month and were down 1.4% compared with a year earlier, the Federal Statistical Office reported Monday.

In the UK, the S&P Global UK Consumer Sentiment Index rose to 47.3 in October from 46.0 in September, which is the second-highest score in more than three years despite remaining below the 50-point threshold demarcating improvement from deterioration.

And in corporate news, the Nigerian government has blocked UK oil and gas company Shell's $2.4 billion sale of its onshore and shallow-water oil and gas assets in the Niger Delta, Reuters reported Monday, citing the country's upstream regulator. Shell didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.

Shell also said Monday that an oil leak from a land-based pipeline at its energy and chemicals park in Singapore has stopped. The company said it detected oil sheens at the water channel between the Bukom Besar and Kechil islands.

British mining company BHP Group is facing a liability trial that began Monday in the UK over the Mariana dam collapse in Brazil, with lawyers representing over 600,000 Brazilians saying a possible settlement in Brazil would not impact proceedings in the UK.

And Swiss financial services company UBS is working on relabeling its sustainable products following lawyers' advice that some ESG descriptions can draw criticisms or regulatory scrutiny, Bloomberg reported Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter. UBS did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
