05:46 AM EST, 01/29/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Asian stock markets generally gained Wednesday in holiday-thinned trading, as the global tech-rebound extended to the region.

Exchanges in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul, Singapore and Taiwan were closed for the New Year observance.

Tokyo and Sydney finished in the green, although Bangkok edged lower.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 opened higher and finished up by 1%, as tech issues followed overnight rebounds of peer issues on Wall Street.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 rose 397.91 to 39,414.78, as gaining issues outnumbered losers 148 to 76.

Leading the upside was semiconductor-maker Renesas Electronics, up 5.9%, while Shin-Etsu Chemical declined 4.3%, after reporting earnings.

In Mumbai, the broad-gauge Sensex rose 0.8%, in part powered by tech issues. IT-giant Infosys gained 2.7% on the day.

On the other regional exchanges, the Australian ASX 200 inclined 0.6%; and the Thai Set declined 0.2%.
