US Tariff-Pause Boosts Asian Stock Markets

06:55 AM EDT, 04/10/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Asian stock markets rallied Thursday after Washington announced a pause in certain tariffs and opened the door to trade negotiations.

Exchanges in Tokyo and Taiwan climbed by nearly double-digit percentages, leading regional rallies.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 opened higher and rose to the close finishing up 9.1% as traders cheered reports that the Trump administration would delay and possibly negotiate new tariff schedules.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 jumped 2,894.97 to 34,609, as gaining issues outnumbered losers 224 to one.

Leading the upside was electrical-equipment maker Fujikura, up 18%, while online fashion house ZOZO fell 1.2%.

In economic news, Japan's producer price index, or PPI, rose 4.3% on year last month from a 4.2% rise in February, reported the Bank of Japan. Fossil fuel and utility bills added to price pressures.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index opened higher and held ground, finishing up 2.1% after the Trump administration put a 90-day pause on import levies for most of Asia's trading partners, although mainland China was excluded from the respite.

The broad gauge Hang Seng rose 417.29 to 20,681.78, as gaining issues outnumbered losers 77 to six. The Hang Seng TECH Index gained 2.7% on the day, while the Mainland Properties Index rose 2.3%.

Leading the upside was JD Health International, rising 8.2%, while coal-producer China Shenhua Energy declined 1.8%.

On the mainland, the Shanghai Composite increased 1.2% to 3,223.64.

In economic news, China's consumer price index fell 0.1% on year in March, following a 0.7% drop the previous month, reported the National Bureau of Statistics. The nation's PPI shrank 2.5% on-year in March, worsening from the 2.2% decline seen in February.

On the other regional exchanges, the S. Korean KOSPI rose 6.6%; the Taiwan TWSE inclined 9.3%; the Australian ASX 200 inclined 4.5%; the Singapore Straits Times Index rose 5.4%, and the Thai Set inclined 4.2%. India equities exchanges were closed on holiday.
