05:47 AM EST, 01/06/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Asian stock markets largely gained on Tuesday, as the tech rally propelled several regional equity indices to record zeniths.

Hong Kong and Shanghai gained ground, while Tokyo, Seoul and Taiwan closed at all-time highs.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 opened higher and rose to the close, finishing up 1.3% as traders embraced tech and oil shares, against a backdrop of possibly greater government fiscal stimulus in 2026.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 rose 685.28 to 52,518.08, as gaining issues outnumbered losers 189 to 33.

Leading the upside was tech-conglomerate Hitachi, gaining 7.4%, while utility Chuba Electric Power fell 9.6% after disclosing it may have underestimated earthquake risks at a nuclear power plant.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index opened higher and held ground, closing up 1.4% as traders moved into property issues on hopes for Beijing stimulus.

The broad gauge Hang Seng rose 363.21 to 26,710.45, as gaining issues outnumbered losers 65 to 19. The Hang Seng TECH Index gained 1.5% on the day, while the Mainland Properties Index rose 2.5%.

Leading the upside was aluminum producer China Hongqiao, gaining 6.1%, while personal-products maker Hengan International declined 2.6%.

On the mainland, the Shanghai Composite rose 1.5% to 4,083.67.

China property issues gained after "the Qiushi Journal, a publication of the Communist Party that is often viewed as an indicator of policy direction, ran an article on New Year's Day that called for altering expectations for the property market and acknowledged the damage falling home prices have done to household wealth," reported the South China Morning Post.

On the other regional exchanges, the S. Korean KOSPI rose 1.5%; the Taiwan TWSE added 1.6%; the Australian ASX 200 lost 0.5%; the Singapore Straits Times Index rose 1.3%, and the Thai Set was off 0.6%. In late trading in Mumbai, the Sensex was down 0.4%.
