06:40 AM EST, 03/03/2026 (MT Newswires) -- European bourses tracked sharply lower midday Tuesday as traders mulled the unfolding Middle East war and Iranian targeting of regional oil infrastructure.

The pan-continental Stoxx Europe 600 Index was off 3.1% mid-session.

Front-month North Sea Brent crude oil futures were up 9% to $84.77 a barrel.

The status of the Strait of Hormuz, through which oil tankers from Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, and other nations pass, was unclear midday. Tehran has threatened to close the passage, but the US Central Command, or CENTCOM, is reported to have said ship traffic can proceed.

Bank, tech, retail, and property stocks led broad losses on continental trading floors.

Investors also eyed Wall Street futures flashing red, and lower closes overnight on Asian exchanges.

In economic news, the Eurozone's consumer price index (CPI) rose by 1.9% on the year in February, accelerating from a 1.7% gain in January, reported Eurostat.

In midday action, the Stoxx Europe 600 Technology Index was down 3%, and the Stoxx 600 Banks Index lost 4.3%.

The Stoxx Europe 600 Oil and Gas Index eased 1.7%, while the Stoxx 600 Europe Food and Beverage Index declined 1.8%.

The REITE, a European REIT index, fell 3.6%, while the Stoxx Europe 600 Retail Index was down 3.4%.

On the national market indexes, Germany's DAX was down 3.9%, and the FTSE 100 in London lost 2.7%. The CAC 40 in Paris was down 3.1%, and Spain's IBEX 35 eased 4.5%.

Yields on benchmark 10-year German bonds were higher, near 2.81%.

The Euro Stoxx 50 volatility index was up 28.7% at 29.26, indicating above-average volatility for European stock markets in the next 30 days, a negative signal. A reading above 20 indicates choppier markets ahead, while below 20 suggests calmer exchanges.
