06:41 AM EDT, 09/24/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Asian stock markets were mixed on the downside Thursday, as global crude prices rebounded from recent declines, and bond yields inched higher.

Tokyo finished in the green while Hong Kong and Shanghai lost ground, as did most other regional exchanges. Seoul's trading floors were dark on holiday.

Brent crude oil futures rose 1.8% to $104.96 a barrel during Asian market hours.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 opened higher after a hiatus and finished up 0.8%, as traders waded back into AI- and semiconductor-related issues.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 rose 495.04 to 65,513.99, although losing issues outnumbered risers 129 to 95, as gains were concentrated in the tech sector.

Leading the upside was semiconductor-maker Socionext, up 15%, while staffing agency Recruit declined 7.8%.

In economic news, Japan's flash manufacturing purchasing managers index declined to 54.1 in September from 54.9 in August, but still struck above the 50-mark that separates growth from contraction.

Yields on 10-year Japanese government bonds touched 3.07%, testing 30-year highs.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index opened lower and could not recover, closing off 0.29%, weighed down by weak property and tech issues.

The broad gauge Hang Seng fell 72.99 to 24,761.13, as losers outnumbered gainers 57 to 36. The Hang Seng TECH Index lost 0.4% on the day, while the Mainland Properties Index fell 1.1%.

Leading the upside was PetroChina, gaining 2.8%, while mining concern CMOC declined 3.7%.

On the mainland, the Shanghai Composite fell 1.2% to 3,888.37.

On the other regional exchanges, the Taiwan TWSE declined 0.3%; the Australian ASX 200 declined 0.7%; the Singapore Straits Times Index fell 0.5%; and the Thai SET declined 0.5%. In late trading in Mumbai, the Sensex was down 1.7%.

The MSCI All Country Asia Pacific Index fell 0.9% on the day.
