European Equities Mixed in Monday Trading; UBS Sees Multiple Merger Inquiries

11:56 AM EDT, 09/28/2026 (MT Newswires) -- European stock markets closed mixed in Monday trading, with the Stoxx 600 up 0.1%, Germany's DAX adding 0.1%, the UK's FTSE 100 shedding 0.1%, France's CAC was fractionally higher, and the Swiss Market Index slightly higher.

Oil prices rose following the US rejection of Iran's conditional proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump told his staff that he expects to resume bombing Iran after the US midterm elections in November, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.

North Sea Brent crude-oil futures rose 3.4% to $107.91.

In regulatory news, Apple and Amazon are facing a renewed legal battle in the UK after Britain's Competition Appeal Tribunal allowed part of a consumer lawsuit against the companies to proceed, the tribunal said Monday. The lawsuit alleged the tech companies entered into an agreement in 2018 that limited the sale and advertising of Apple products on Amazon's UK marketplace, resulting in consumers paying higher prices. The portion of the case allowed to proceed could be valued at 289 million pounds ($383.2 million) to 306 million pounds, including interest, according to the claimant, as shown in the tribunal document.

In corporate news, UBS has received interest from at least eight foreign banks regarding a possible merger or combination, Swiss newspaper Blick reported Sunday, citing an insider familiar with the matter. UBS is under financial pressure to come up with an estimated additional $18 billion in reserves, after Switzerland's upper house voted on Wednesday to toughen the bank's capital requirements, Reuters reported Sunday. Under the proposed rules, UBS would need to cover 90% of its foreign investments with Common Equity Tier 1 capital, according to Blick. UBS shares were down 0.4% in Swizerland.

HSBC has adopted Nasdaq's Calypso for exchange-traded derivatives clearing, expanding its use beyond over-the-counter derivatives and repo clearing, the companies said Monday. The bank also plans to use the platform for US Treasury cash transactions by year-end ahead of mandatory clearing, they said in a joint statement. HSBC shares added 0.3% in London.

TotalEnergies projects 4% energy production growth per year until 2030, the company said Monday. The company said that encompasses 3% in annual oil and gas production growth between 2025 and 2030. The French oil and gas major also committed to annual dividend increases of 5% until 2030 and confirmed a shareholder return of 40% of cash flow, the company said. TotalEnergies were fractionally higher in Paris.

Azerbaijan's Socar, which controls Italiana Petroli, will put price caps on its fuel throughout Italy, following Eni's earlier move in the country, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said in a Sunday post on social media platform X that was translated by Google. Socar's price cap is a "voluntary contribution" without new taxes or top-down imposition, the minister said. On Friday, Eni announced fuels marketed by Enilive will be capped at certain prices for an initial 30-day period starting Monday, with potential extension through year end subject to market and supply conditions. Eni shares rose 2% in Milan.

Vodafone and Societe Generale have received the European Commission's approval for their proposed acquisition of a joint control of OXG Glasfaser Beteiligungs, a German fiber-optic infrastructure firm, the commission said Monday. Vodafone shares shed 0.3% in London, and Societe Generale shares fell 1.2% in Paris.

Stellantis joint venture Dongfeng Stellantis Automotive Technology and Momenta have agreed to jointly develop driver-assistance systems for new Peugeot and Jeep models. The systems will use Momenta's R7 World Model and will initially cover new models in China and Europe, with plans to extend the technology to other global markets. Stellantis shares added 0.4% in Milan.
