07:42 AM EDT, 10/22/2026 (MT Newswires) -- European bourses tracked lower midday Thursday as traders weighed mounting Persian Gulf tensions and crude prices, and the stressed national finances of France.
The pan-continental Stoxx Europe 600 Index was off 0.9% mid-session.
Bank and tech stocks led losses on continental trading floors, while food and oil shares gained.
Yields on French 10-year bonds reached 5.1% in midday activity, the highest since 2002 as Paris wrestled with social unrest, yet proposed cuts to national government outlays.
Brent crude futures rose 2.8% to $111.85 a barrel in midday trades, after Washington ordered evacuation of certain US personnel and families from Saudi Arabia, and following lethal Houthi missile attacks on the Gulf kingdom's air- and oil-facilities.
Investors also eyed Wall Street futures flashing red, and lower closes overnight on Asian exchanges.
In the sectors, the Stoxx Europe 600 Technology Index was down 2%, and the Stoxx 600 Banks Index lost 2.6% in mid-session action.
The Stoxx Europe 600 Oil and Gas Index gained 0.3%, while the Stoxx 600 Europe Food and Beverage Index edged 0.8% higher.
The REITE, a European REIT index, declined 0.3%.
On the national market indexes, Germany's DAX was down 0.9%, and the FTSE 100 in London lost 0.4%. The CAC 40 in Paris was down 1.3%, and Spain's IBEX 35 eased 1.6%.
The benchmark 10-year German bonds saw yields decline to 3.34%.
The Euro Stoxx 50 volatility index was up 12% at 20.33, indicating above-average volatility for European stock markets in the next 30 days, a negative signal. A reading above 20 indicates choppier markets ahead, while below 20 suggests calmer exchanges.
